Business Opportunities: Secrets Revealed
Published in Paperback by Business Basics, Inc (01 June, 2000)
Authors: Herb Morgan and Ardith Morgan
Average review score:

"Biz Ops" just a little too late for many
"Secrets Revealed" shows how Multi Level Marketing techniques are used in everyones daily lives. Unfortunate that it has not reached the many that have lost millions in MML scams. Monthly Newsletter is well worth the price of the book alone.

Been There, Done That!
Are you considering the purchase of a your own business? Please, read this book first. It can save you not only thousands of dollars, but give you crystal clear insight into the pitfalls of buying a business, franchise, or multi-level marketing scheme of your own. Herb and Ardith have researched hundreds of business opportunities, (scams) and in simple, candidly written text, explain how to avoid being taken advantage of by most advertised business opportunites which have seduced thousands of unsuspecting investors out of their lifes savings. Herb and Ardith first tell you how to protect yourself from unscrupulous opportunity salespersons by offering specific questions that you need to ask the salesperson, your lenders, potential partners and yourself before you sign any dotted line. Then, if you are still convinced that buying your own business is the right decision for you, Business Opportunities tells you how to design a business plan which will not insure, but will increase your chances for success in your own business venture.

The Morgans have not set out to tell you how to buy a business. More importantly, they show you how not to buy a business, which will help assure that you and your hard earned savings will not be divorced. Business Opportunities could very well be titled, "Things I Wish I Had Learned in Kindergarten About Business." Herb and Ardith use real life experiences collected from interviews with people who wished that they had read Business Opportunities before, not after they had experiences with their own business or partnership.

Trust me, I'm one of them!

Business Rules and Information Systems: Aligning IT with Business Goals
Published in Paperback by Addison Wesley (18 March, 2002)
Author: Tony Morgan
Average review score:

Rules! Rules! I'll give you rules boy!
Dear Amazon.com Reader,

Information systems often fail because the IT analysts, architects and builders don't know how to talk to the non-IT business people. On top of that, a major stumbling block in the development and delivery of effective solutions can be found in problems associated with all aspects of integration. Fortunately, a solid and well-grounded Business Rules approach can offer significant advantages in overcoming these hurdles.

Not many people may realize this, but Unisys was the proud inheritor of almost forty years of knowledge and experience in such key business critical areas as Business IT, OLTP, Mission Critical Systems, Decision Support (e.g. Data Warehousing, MAPPER etc.), Business Modelling (e.g. MAPPER/ESD - expert systems development and delivery - highly integrated Business Rules repository and rules engines) and most importantly major systems analysis, development, delivery, integration and management. Many of these assets were inherited from the hugely inventive Sperry Univac, other great ideas came from Burroughs.

But most of all, the real assets of a smart company are its people - and it shows. Tony Morgan has written a book that meets a real need - i.e. it addresses the question "so what's the big deal with Business Rules" - and in passing, will inform, inspire and educate the reader in a way that only someone who knows what they are writing about can.

The central theme of the book is the application of Business Rules to the task of aligning IT with business goals, a task that is talked about by many, yet achieved by few. Tony Morgan maintains the readers attention by not only giving a clear and uncluttered description, with focused examples, of what Business Rules are all about, but also uses references to other aspects of IT and business - which I found immensely enjoyable.

All in all, I found this book about as enjoyable as having an interestingly pleasant discussion about Business Rules, Business and IT in general over a couple of beers in the local bar. So, I personally would recommend this book to anyone who wants a very good introduction to Business Rules and their role in "Aligning IT with Business Goals".

Best regards,

Martyn R Jones

Best introductory text on the subject
This book introduces the concept and mechanics of business rules, and is essential reading for anyone involved in eliciting and writing requirements, or developing specifications. I want to disclose that I am a staunch advocate of business rules, so take this into consideration as you read this review.

This is one of two books on the subject. The other book, Business Rules Applied by Barbara von Halle, is more suitable for an experienced practitioner or someone responsible for implementing business rules as an enterprise methodology. This book, however, focuses on the basics and addresses topics, such as object orientation and development, that are not found in von Halle's book. Both books are valuable, but to different audiences.

What I like most about this book is that it painstakingly describes how to define business rules, and how to clearly and unambiguously describe them. Moreover, the approach given in this book employs the object constraint language, which is a part of the unified modeling language (UML) version 1.1. As such it shows how to integrate business rules into use cases, and to develop artifacts that align to organizations that are using UML or the Rational Unified Process, as well as object-oriented frameworks in general.

My favorite chapters were 3, which is about defining business rules (getting them right) and 5, which covers controlling business rule quality. To me these are the keys to understanding and using business rules, and both chapters were clear and filled with examples. I also liked the appendix, which covered logic - another essential knowledge factor for analysts who are involved in requirements and specifications.

If you're new to business rules or are exploring them, start here. Even though the von Halle book is better suited to experienced practitioners, I would still recommend this book to members of that audience who are working in object-oriented environments or are using UML. If you are also using UML, do consider also reading Alistair Cockburn's excellent book titled Writing Effective Use Cases because that book is completely consistent with the material in this one.

Curriculum of Love: Cultivating the Spiritual Nature of Children
Published in Paperback by Grace Pub & Communications (October, 1996)
Authors: Morgan Simone Daleo and Frank Riccio
Average review score:

A wonderful book for encouraging spirituality inkids
Curriculum of Love is a wonderful book for mother's and children. It encourages a "oneness" with the universe at a child's level and gives parents great ideas for projects, dances, and books to read to their children. I can't say enough positive things about this book. The list of resources provided also helps find some of the less obvious items.

Perfect for parents and educators!
A wonderful resource for anyone interacting with children. With chapters like "Being of Service" and "Celebrating Community," it stresses thoughtful activities that are entertaining--not silly, sappy or boring--for both adult and child.

The Day the World Ended
Published in Hardcover by Ulverscroft Large Print Books (November, 1987)
Authors: Gordon Thomas, Max Morgan Witts, and W. Max Morgan
Average review score:

Story of a Political as Well as Natural Disaster
To me this review does not do justice to the most compelling aspect of the book, which is how political pressure, and assurances of safety in the face of all evidence to the contrary, by governmental officials and other trusted leaders dissuaded the people of St. Pierre from evacuating the city in time to save their lives. I read this book many years ago and have forgotten some of the details, but this theme -- more popularly explored in "Jaws" and recently in "Isaac's Storm" -- has stayed in my mind. Most readers will never be threatened by a volcanic eruption, but this book is a somewhat grim reminder that our own leaders may be lying about impending natural disasters. Remember Pelee!

Excellent Disaster Book, Fascinating Story
Thomas and Witts tell the story of a week in May, 1902,when the Carrabean city of St. Pierre was obliterated by a volcanic eruption. When I first saw this book, I wondered how anyone could pen over 150 pages on a volcano that wiped a city out in seconds, leaving only two survivors. I thought there would not be much to write about. Boy was I wrong! It turns out that in the week prior to the eruption, St. Pierre was hit by landslides, a tsunami, and even a deadly snake infestation! Several hundred were killed before the great event itself. The final eruption is simply the climatic horror and can almost be seen as a blessing, putting people out of their misery. This book is probably hard to find now, but it is worth getting, and will interest just about everyone from the scientist to the casual reader.

Dealing creatively with death : a manual of death education and simple burial

Don't buy the old edition--look for the 14th edition!
Amazon lists a lot of old editions of this book--most prominently the tenth. The 14th edition is the current one, and the only one with up-to-date information. It is readily available. The old, out-of-print editions have information that is out of date. If you are looking at a listing that says "out of print," that is not the current book. Make the effort to find the current, in-print, 14th edition!

Dying at Home Can Be Done
When our son was dying from a rare disease called Hurler Sydrome my wife picked up a copy of this book. Using information in this book allowed us to have our son die at home. I built his coffin and we laid him out for 3 days before his funeral service at our church. He was the first funeral in the church in which a body was actually present. My close friends and I hand dug his grave and placed the concrete liner. His burial service was attended by his young friends and they helped us fill the hole after his coffin was placed. This book gave us up to date and very realistic information. It is written with senistivity and is an essential guide for those wishing to forgo the services of an expensive funeral home. This book eased our sorrow. Marshall Hansen, Arcata, California

The Designs of William De Morgan.
Published in Hardcover by Antique Collectors Club (October, 1996)
Author: Martin Greenwood
Average review score:

Surfeit of Wm. de Morgan
Comprehensive view of Wm. de Morgan for the interested person. It covers a huge period in English ceramic art. This book has hundreds of his pieces or designs and tells his chronology as an artist. I will not lend it out; this is the ultimate compliment.

The best book on de Morgan's extraordinary work.
Published in conjunction with an exhibition of de Morgan's work at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1989, this book contains the complete collection of William de Morgan's original pottery and tile designs and drawings that was given to the museum after his death in 1917. With just about 20 pages of text of the total 256 pages, it is nearly all photographs with over 50 pages in color. De Morgan began working with William Morris in 1862, but after ten years he set up his own studio making tiles, vases, bowls and other domestic ceramics. His designs, inspired by brightly colored Middle-Eastern, Hispanic and Italian Renaissance pottery are beautiful. The forms of his vessels seem, for the most part, somewhat stilted but ocasionally they become organic enough to be satisfying to the modern eye. However his use of decoration is without equal except, perhaps, in some Hopi work. This book will be of interest to ceramic artists in particular, but any artist, art historian, or collector will enjoy it.
